Volunteer Application Procedure
Working with children and young people is both a privilege and a responsibility and we need to safeguard their well being as well as protect those who are leaders. Therefore it is essential for anyone getting involved with CYM to follow the procedures stated below.
Before you work with young people
Once you have expressed an interest in helping with CYM’s work the following process needs to be worked through. Please ensure that each stage of the process happens – if it doesn’t please inform the CYM staff member responsible for the activity you are helping with.
- Application Form
You will receive a ‘CYM Volunteer Application Form’, this needs to be completed and returned to the CYM office. If you are under 18 years of age the application form will include a parental consent section.
- Interview/Conversation
You will have an informal interview. This isn’t anything scary – it will be a conversation with a CYM staff member (who is involved with the activity you would like to help with). They will discuss your past experience, what role you have within the team and whether any specific training is required. It is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have.
- References
The CYM office will write to the referees provided by you on your application form and ask them for references.
- CRB Check
You will be sent the necessary paperwork so CYM can check whether you have any criminal convictions with the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB). (18+’s only)
In the unlikely event that an unsatisfactory CRB report is received, the CEO would be immediately informed. The CEO would discuss this with appropriate staff and Chairman of Trustees. The matter may further be discussed with the person’s Church Leader and the person in question before a decision is made but we would always err on the side of caution.
- Child Protection
You will be given a copy of CYM’s child protection policy, a training booklet and a leaflet concerning your specific activity. It is essential that you spend time reading them. Remember to ask any questions you may have.
- Job Description and Accountability
Finally you will be given a written ‘job description’. This will summarise what you are expected to do. This is not ‘set-in-stone’ and will be reviewed regularly as your involvement progresses. You will also be told who your ‘line-manager’ is – this is the person who will be overseeing your work.
