Water
Just as water plays a huge part of many people’s lives in African so it is a key issue that we explore during African Adventure.
- Did you know that roughly 70% of your body is water?
- Did you know that roughly 70% of the earth’s surface is covered with water?
- Did you know that roughly 88% of all diseases are caused by unsafe drinking water?
- Did you know that less that 1% of the world’s fresh water is available for direct human use?
- Did you know that over 1,100,000,000 people don’t have access to safe drinking water every day?
- Did you know that YOU can make a difference?
The Water Challenge
African Adventure has teamed up with an organisation called Samaritans Purse. They do all kinds of good things around the world helping people who are under privileged. One of those things is to provide water filters and other sanitary resources to people who do not currently have them.
Every group that visits African Adventure will enable the equivalent of one family to have a water filter that will provide them with clean drinking water every day. Our challenge to you is that when you get back to school you raise money to help another and another and another.
Fund Raising Ideas
Here are some ideas we have heard of so far for raising money, could you do one of these? Or can you be creative and do something original? Let us know when you hold an event and the African Adventure Team might be able to get involved too!
- No uniform day at school
- African Day - everyone in school pays to have an African Experience (dress up, try foods, drum, dance, sing, etc)
- Water fun and games - Organise a fun day where people pay to play (why not have a set of stocks and throw wet sponges at your teacher?)
- Fair Trade Stand - Set up a stand at break/lunch to sell fair trade goodies to other pupils (or after school for the parents!)
- Fun Run - why not dress up and get sponsored to run around your school field… one group did it in their pyjamas!
- Water Walk - One school carried water around their field for 4 miles… the same as many people living in Africa have to do every day!
- School Play - One school collected money at the end of their school play to raise money… but could you do a play about water issues in Africa and ask people to pay for their tickets?
- Car Wash - We heard that one girl decided to take the challenge on her own and spend a few Saturday’s cleaning cars… could you work as a team and clean parents and teachers cars?
- Water Bottle - You could fill a plastic water bottle with coins and see how much money you can get in. Try sticking our water bottle label on to help you remember.
Let us know what you have done so we can add it to our list.
