Chaplaincy

Working in schools and their surrounding communities to provide spiritual and pastoral support.

WHAT IS SCHOOL

CHAPLAINCY?

CYM chaplains provide safe spaces for students and staff to explore who they are and how they are developing. Chaplains create opportunities for spiritual development and exploration as well as supporting the wellbeing of the whole school community. They are based in primary and secondary schools, colleges and alternative provision settings

  • What the staff say:

(THE CHAPLAIN BRINGS) “AN ADDED ASPECT TO OUR CHRISTIAN DISTINCTIVENESS. ANOTHER LAYER OF NURTURE SUPPORT. PROMOTION OF OUR CHURCH SCHOOL STATUS THROUGH WORKING WITH TLG COACHES, THE CHURCH SCHOOL COUNCIL AND OTHER STAKEHOLDERS.”

  • What the staff say:

"THE CHAPLAIN IS ALWAYS READY AND WILLING TO BE PART OF WHAT IS GOING ON AND TO SUPPORT IN ANYWAY WITH POSITIVITY AND ENTHUSIASM- EVEN IF IT MEANS LITERALLY GETTING HER HANDS DIRTY."

  • What the staff say:

"THE CHAPLAIN BRINGS TOO MUCH TO BE PUT SUCCINCTLY INTO WORDS. HE HAS AN AMAZING ABILITY TO RECOGNISE WHO NEEDS A LISTENING EAR AND A KIND WORD. HE IS TRUSTED BY SOME OF OUR MOST VULNERABLE STUDENTS AND HE IS THEIR SAFE SPACE”

HOW DOES IT

WORK

Each chaplaincy is tailored to meet the needs of their specific school, meaning no two chaplaincies look the same! There are lots of overlapping features though. Chaplains care for students' wellbeing with 1:1 support and mentoring, groups (including interest or faith-based groups, Kintsugi Hope Wellbeing courses and more). A really key element of chaplaincy is presence. You'll often find our chaplains out and about in their schools: a friendly face on the gate, building relationships in the cafeteria or supporting students who struggle to get into lessons.

    What the pupils say:

I REALLY ENJOYED MY TIME WITH THE CHAPLAIN AND THOUGHT IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST TIMES I HAVE EVER HAD

    What the pupils say:

"THE CHAPLAIN MAKES ME FEEL HAPPY AND GRATEFUL TO HAVE HIM TO TALK TO IF I’M HAVING A BAD DAY AND I NEED TO GET SOMETHING OFF MY CHEST."

  • What the pupils say:

“IT HELPED ME BUILD UP MY INSIDE STRENGTH TO COPE WITH THE ANXIETY I HAD FELT."

WHY IS IT WORTH

IT?

We know that in many schools, behaviour is challenging, students are struggling with their mental health like never before, and staff are feeling the pressure! School Chaplaincy brings a holistic focus to wellbeing, providing support and interventions that respond to these challenges. A CYM School Chaplain works to enrich the lives of everyone within the school community.

At Basecamp, our passion is to see children grow in their sense of self, to boost their self-esteem and gain a greater sense of who they are and their place in the wider world.
